Artists bio

What strange magic turns the words written on a page or computer screen into images that dance inside our heads, sometimes more real than the world around us? Libraries are often the first place that children – and many adults – learn to dream, to see possibilities beyond their own experience. Reading feeds the imagination.

We credit the dreamy worlds of books with some responsibility for turning us into imaginative adults. Ironically, it’s possible that libraries have primed us to apply for this opportunity at the library, and we relish the idea of imagining something wonderful for the readers and dreamers of tomorrow.

~ Caitlind & Wayne, Artists & Collaborators

Caitlind r.c. Brown & Wayne Garrett make site-responsive artworks, lead bizarre & compelling community projects, and tour sculptures internationally. Whether imagining work for formal galleries, pre-demolition buildings, mountain meadows, or their own backyard, they believe in art’s potential to permeate everyday places, building our human capacity for self-criticality and a clearer vision of the complex, superimposed world(s) that engulf us always.

Caitlind r.c. Brown is an artist, collaborator, and cultural organizer based in Calgary/Mohkinstsis. She graduated from Alberta University of the Arts in 2010, working in the arts and culture sector, facilitating festivals, slinging hotdogs, and supporting community radio while pursuing a fulltime arts practice. She is a co-founder of WRECK CITY, organizer of The Hibernation Project, co-host of EARS HAVE EYES sound art radio program on CJSW 90.9 FM, and long-time collaborator with Wayne Garrett.

Wayne Garrett is an artist and musician living in Calgary/Mohkinstsis. He trained as a Machinist at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, working as a Journeyman and musician in Whitehorse, Yukon, before returning to Calgary to pursue Jazz Music at Mount Royal University. His visual arts practice began in 2007 in an unassuming suburban house with mischievous and award-winning art collective The Arbour Lake Sghool. Playing in bands trained him to be a good collaborator, a practice he continues with groups like the Wine Soaked Preachers, Ghostkeeper, Ryan Bourne & The Plant City Band, Surf Kitties! and his solo album, Marine Life.
